The Evolution of Field Early - Type Galaxies to Z ∼ 0

چکیده
We have measured the Fundamental Plane (FP) parameters for a sample of 30 field early-type galaxies (E/S0) in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.66. We find that: i) the FP is defined and tight out to the highest redshift bin; ii) the intercept γ evolves as dγ/dz = 0.58 −0.13 (for Ω = 0.3,ΩΛ = 0.7), or, in terms of average effective mass to light ratio, as d log(M/LB)/dz = −0.72 +0.11 −0.16, i. e. faster than is observed for cluster E/S0 (−0.49± 0.05). In addition, we detect [OII] emission > 5Å in 22% of an enlarged sample of 42 massive E/S0 in the range 0.1 < z < 0.73, in contrast with the quiescent population observed in clusters at similar z. We interpret these findings as evidence that a significant fraction of massive field E/S0 experiences secondary episodes of star-formation at z < 1. SPATIALLY RESOLVED STELLAR KINEMATICS OF FIELD EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES AT z = 1: EVOLUTION OF THE ROTATION RATE
We use the spatial information of our previously published VLT/FORS2 absorption-line spectroscopy to measure mean stellar velocity and velocity dispersion profiles of 25 field early-type galaxies at a median redshift z 1⁄4 0:97 (full range 0:6 < z < 1:2). This provides the first detailed study of early-type galaxy rotation at these redshifts. From surface brightness profiles from HST imaging we...
متن کاملThe Possible Precursors of z = 0 Cluster
We examine the distribution of stellar masses of galaxies in MS 1054.4-0321 and CL 0152.7-1357, two X-ray-selected clusters of galaxies at z = 0.83. Our stellar mass estimates, from spectral energy distribution fitting, reproduce the dynamical masses as measured from velocity dispersions and halflight radii with a scatter of 0.2 dex in the mass for early-type galaxies. When we restrict our samp...
متن کامل0 The Fundamental Plane of Gravitational Lens Galaxies and The Evolution of Early - Type Galaxies in Low Density Environments
Most gravitational lenses are early-type galaxies in relatively low density environments – a " field " rather than a " cluster " population. Their average properties are the mass-averaged properties of all early-type galaxies. We show that field early-type galaxies with 0 < z < 1, as represented by the lens galaxies, lie on the same fundamental plane as those in rich clusters at similar redshif...
متن کاملOptical − Nir Color Gradients in Early Type Galaxies at Z . 1 . 0 1
Recent studies based on line indices of nearby early-type galaxies suggest that stars in the galaxies’ inner part may be younger and more metal rich than stars in the outer part. If confirmed, the finding has a profound implication for the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies, since such age gradients naturally arise if merging played an important role in their formation/evolution. As...
متن کاملEvolution since Z=1 of the Morphology–density Relation for Galaxies
We measure the morphology–density relation of galaxies at z=1 across the full three orders of magnitude in projected galaxy density available in low–redshift studies. Our study adopts techniques that are comparable with those applied at lower redshifts, allowing a direct investigation of how the morphological segregation of galaxies has evolved over the last 8 Gyr. Although the morphology–densi...
متن کاملLuminosity Evolution of Field Early-type Galaxies to Z = 0.55
We study the Fundamental Plane (FP) of field early-type galaxies at intermediate redshift, using HST WFPC2 observations and deep Keck spectroscopy. Structural parameters and internal velocity dispersions are measured for eighteen galaxies at 0.15 < z < 0.55. Rest frame M⁄ LB ratios are determined from the Fundamental Plane and compared to those of cluster early-type galaxies at the same redshif...
